How a D.C. Bar Provided a ‘Haven’ for the Proud Boys
Updated: Jan 2
Fueled by President Trump's false claims of a stolen election, racist, bigots, conspiracy theorists and hate groups of all stripes from across the United States descended upon Washington, D.C. for a pro-Trump march, dubbed the Million MAGA March on Saturday, December 12, 2020. The event ended in 4 stabbed and 33 arrested after Trump supporters and counterprotesters clashed. One such hate group, a white supremist militia called the Proud Boys, nevertheless found comfort and refuge at Harry’s Pub, located in the heart of Penn Quarter.
While the Proud Boys have left D.C., it is not lost on ADOS, ADOS Ally's and local DMV religious leaders partnering with ADOS, that Harry's Pub acted as white supremist sympathizers by opening their doors in a global pandemic to reckless, law breaking racist that boldly refused to adhere to the Mayor's Covid19 mask mandate. Because of this, Rev. George C. Gilbert, Jr., leader of The Center for Racial Equity and Justice (The Center) has decided enough is enough and penned a letter on the behalf of The Center, the Missionary Baptist Ministers Conference of Washington D.C, the Baptist Convention of Washington, D.C. and Vicinity, the National Capital Convention and other clergy, residents and businesses asking for the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington to convene a meeting with our representatives and the owner of Harry’s Bar to discuss our concerns and demand accountability from Harry's owners and city officials.
The days of disrespect, disregarding and destroying of ADOS lives and community without a collective, bold and decisive response is over. Please watch this space for details and updates on the meeting date and time once scheduled.
For the American Descendants of Slavery it is truly a new day. Our gate is FINALLY up and we're coming... Stay Tuned!
